One of the hottest Italian Furniture styles is Neoclassical! You might be asking yourself what the heck is Neoclassical Style Furniture? Well, let us give you a little history!
What is Neoclassical Style Furniture?
In the Neoclassical Furniture and interior design style that resulted from such study of classical remains, there is great emphasis on form. Straight lines, logically ordered, replace the curves and flounces of Rococo furniture. Ornamentation and decoration are sometimes detailed and careful, nearly always abundant.
Neoclassical furniture was inspired by classical elements from ancient Greece and Rome and is often referred to as the Louis XVI style, named after the French king who governed in the advent of the French Revolution. The sinuous Rococo lines disappeared, and layouts looked massive and heavier. They were based on basic geometric shapes that featured plenty of straight lines, and the compositions were completely symmetrical. Furniture legs were straight, either rounded or rectangular, and often had plenty of vertical grooves, similar to the fluted ancient columns.
Neoclassical furniture is meant to reflect both grace and power. Neoclassicism is enlivened by gilt and silver leaf, marquetry, and carved and applied ornamental motifs based on Greek and Roman sculpture: acanthus leaves, garlands, laurel wreaths, sheaves of arrow, medallions, and chair splats are carved in the shapes of lyres and urns.
Here are some definitive characteristics styles of Neoclassical Style Furniture
Straight lines. Moving away from the ornate carvings of the Baroque and Rococo periods that preceded it, Neoclassical furniture offers a more streamlined style. While fluted details can still be found on things like chairs and sofas, design elements center around simpler features such as tapered legs, scrolls, and medallions. Fabrics and upholstery are rich but subtle, with colors like moss green, dusty blue and pink, and crisp, classic white. Patterns include stripes and toile
Urns. Urns were an important part of Neoclassical design. Flanking the walkways of front porches and placed on fireplace mantels, their curved shape provided a dramatic vessel for plants and flowers. Today’s Neoclassical homes incorporate urn-shaped details in pieces such as lamps and table bases.
Greek key motif. The Greek key pattern looks as current today as it did when it was used in ancient times to embellish temples and pottery. The simple geometric pattern that resembles an intricate maze is a classic style that works well on upholstered pieces as well as rugs
Columns. Finally, Neoclassic interior décor found inspiration from the architecture of Greece and Rome. Columns can be found outside and in, with fluted trim and moldings used as a classic feature of this style. If your home doesn’t have this kind of built-in detail, add the look of columns with floor lamps
The delicacy of the earlier Neoclassicism gave way to heavier classical forms with more emphasis on outline than on carved detail. Inspiration for Empire forms was derived from ancient models illustrated in a number of contemporary French and English publications. Even as late as the 1840s, when Victorian taste had begun to take hold of American design books included a number of Empire models. In the country, the style lasted throughout the 19th century.
Veneer was also common, especially in inexpensive pieces. An inlay, which had been so important during the Federal period, was replaced by carving in high relief, stenciling, gilding, and stamped-brass plaques; marble was also common. Other pieces were kept simple by omitting carving and emphasizing the overall line.
